Seeing and Sounding Difference

“Seeing and Sounding Difference” is a media curriculum designed to help students critically examine how difference is represented in visual culture, and to responsibly produce inclusive media. The curriculum emphasizes ethical storytelling through an analysis of race, identity, gender, class, and power in popular media representations.

The framework is grounded in Chapter 7 of the edited volume Emancipatory Change in US Higher Education (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023), which outlines the educational philosophy and need for critical media production training. The chapter, entitled A Center for Sight and Sound, provides the theoretical backbone of the curriculum.
